Aquistore: lessons learned, and problems fixed during 14 years of deep saline aquifer CCS
In many countries, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an important element of strategies to achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions. Injection of CO2 underground is often considered, but has only been tested at a few sites. Deep saline aquifers are a common target, but there are concerns that shallower aquifers used for water supply may be affected.
The presentation will provide an overview of a pioneering deep CO2 injection experiment at Saskatchewan, Canada, the AQUISTORE project. It will show how the geology and hydrogeology were characterised to demonstrate the suitability of the site and the absence of risk to potable groundwater, and summarise the wealth of experience gained over the past 14 years.
